How did a BROKEN EXAM happen?

You probably got to this FAQ by clicking on the BROKEN EXAM FAQ Task Tile (seen above). There are only FOUR reasons why this could happen. Reading this FAQ will help you understand why this has occured AND give you information to what you can do to prevent it in the future.

The WorkCenter will ONLY show the above image AFTER the maximum exam time has passed. A MODULAR QUIZ expires after 2 hours it started. A PERMIT TEST expires 1 hour after it started.

It will look much like this in your WorkCenter as seen below:

It is VERY IMPORTANT you understand why a BROKEN EXAM occured. These reasons are things that the Driving School system CAN'T DO FOR YOU. Before you RESET your BROKEN EXAM, read through this FAQ to determine what occured. You MUST then take a corrective measure BEFORE you RESET the BROKEN EXAM.

Potentially, if you FAIL to read through this FAQ and do not perform the recommendations, this may occur many times if uncorrected (not correcting undesired behavior or not correcting computer system).

OK?

[NOTE: If you want to read a text messaging conversation between a Student and the Techguy regarding device resources and the BROKEN EXAM, please CLICK HERE.]

  1. Once the student CLOSES the WEB BROWSER TAB (after having clicked the green (open) exam tile to start it) the examination mechanism has no way of resuming/tracking that exam. This effectively aborts the examination. This cancels the ability to score the examination in order to take the proper next step as it would normally do.

Closing your web browsers EXAM tab (before you click the FINISH button on the last question presented) is like receiving a paper test at the DPS, taking it outside, crumpling it up, smashing it in the dirt, spilling a diet soda on it, and then taking it back in to be graded. The DPS would reject that attempt as unreadable and refuse that attempt.

  2. OR ... The web browser cache on the machine (when the examination was taken) was full thereby forcing the exam session to an abort condition.

Session information can be thought of like an in-memory browser cookie. Cookies are written to disk. Session information to memory. When the driving school system can not find your session information to resume an exam, it forces the exam to abort. Thereby breaking the exam.

One reason why session information can not be found is when the web browser's cache is too full with data. This forces the device user to clear the web browser cache out. Often times when the web browser cache is too full, there is general unexplained web browser wierdness that can not be explained as to why it is behaving a little funny. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Very inconsistent. To remedy this condition, you have to change to a different recommended browser OR follow the FAQ here in this line to empty it:

INSTRUCTIONS to Clear Browser Web Cache

Basically, once a click to start an exam occurs ... you have to click all the way to the final question in order to properly allow the mechanism to score and set the next proper action. Without answering the last question and clicking the FINISH button, this is an incomplete exam that could result in a black colored examination tile icon in your WorkCenter.

See example of black colored exam tile

A person wouldn't go to the DPS and get up and walk away from a exam shortly after an arrival having already started the test..

If a student does not want to take the exam, it is better to get up and walk away with the web browser tab still open showing a test question. After the exam times out, it will score and reset properly and will not require any technical assistance.

  3. OR ... Your device is running out of usable memory. Since session information is located in in-memory storage, any extra programs/apps you are running can take away from your devices ability to serve you the EXAM, remembering the questions it will present you, knowing what the correct answers are, and score your EXAM.

This is especially important if you MUST run a mobile web browwer (on a phone or tablet). If you have many apps open, that could be robbing your device of precious resources to allow you to take an EXAM on it. So, close Facebook, Instagram, Gmail, Twitter, SnapChat, TikTok, YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, Camera (no selfies), etc, etc, etc... the more you close, the more memory you free up to use in an EXAM.

  4. OR ... Using a mobile web browser (on a cell phone or tablet) or an UNRECOMMENDED Web Browser (a Microsoft version prior to January 15th 2020 or Apple Browser) to take an online exam instead of a desktop/laptop browser will also cause the second condition (seen above).

Please read the CELL PHONE USEAGE FAQ
    and/or the Special Software FAQ

Mobile browsers ARE NOT FULLY CAPABLE to switch tabs back and forth and to do email, texting, Facebook, Spotify, Instagram, etc, etc, etc, and come back to the examination properly to resume the test. Changing to different apps(of a mobile device is used) to check what is happening in social media, or texting, or messaging friends invites the potential to break an EXAM. It might work once, twice, or more. It may never work.

Mobile browsers are hany to use for everything BUT online driving school exams. If possible, please avoid.

    BEST PRACTICES

  • ... after a BROKEN EXAM is FIXED, it is a very wise thing to logout of the driving school system (to destroy any session variable fragments) and then login (to create a fresh set of session variables).

  • ... BEFORE STARTING EXAM is good to close all extra apps/programs you are currently running. If you were taking a test at the DPS, the desk/table you would be sitting at wouldn't have other books and documents in front of you. It would be a clear exam area. It is wise to close all extra programs on your device to give you the same good opportunity.

Logging out and Logging in for the same reason given above to clear any session variable fragments.
